what you need to know
Your baby’s birthday is drawing ever closer, and this is a great time to come and chat with our private midwife about labour and birth, the options available and get support with writing down some ideas and preferences. It is a good opportunity to clarify what to expect during the whole process and life once the baby has arrived. Infant feeding can be discussed, alongside skin to skin, delayed cord clamping and colostrum collection.
During this appointment we will perform blood pressure and urinalysis. An abdominal palpation will be performed to assess the size of your uterus and position of your baby and our private midwife will listen to baby’s heartbeat using a handheld fetal heart monitor.
- Our private midwife appointments are 60 minutes. We offer longer appointment times to ensure that you have the time you need to discuss any of your concerns.
- Partners are welcome to attend appointments with you.
- You feel you would benefit from extra reassurance
- You would prefer to see the same midwife
Midwives are experts at caring for women during pregnancy and we want to provide you with support and evidenced based information along your journey to parenthood. Please note that you must be booked with the NHS or a private hospital by 16 weeks of pregnancy alongside private care.
If you are recommended to have consultant care by the NHS during your pregnancy, our midwife consultations would not be suitable for you. In this case we can organise a consultation with one of our Consultant Obstetricians.
The following are some of the reasons why you may be referred for consultant care:
Previous pregnancy:
- Pre-Eclampsia
- HELLP
- Hypertension
- Obstetric Cholestasis
- Consultant led care
- Low birth weight
- Previous gynaecological surgery
- stillbirth
Previous significant medical history such as:
- Hypertension
- Diabetes
- First degree relative with Diabetes (Mother/Father/Siblings)
- Endocrine disorders such as Hyper / Hypothyroidism
- Any blood disorders such as Thalassaemia/Sickle cell
- BMI <19 or >30
- Epilepsy
- Autoimmune disorders eg SLE (lupus)
